Low-carbon Report on 'Mobile Sources' Released

China's first report discussing the green and low-carbon development of mobile sources in the country was released on July 30, at a related seminar in Chongqing municipality, southwest China.

Chen Sheng, vice president of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), said that the China Mobile Source Green and Low-carbon Development Report provides in-depth guidance and reference for the industry from multiple dimensions such as development overview, policies, and research hotspots.

Providing clarity, Wang Junfang, deputy chief engineer of the Vehicle Emission Control Center (VECC) of CRAES said that, "Mobile source, short for mobile air pollution sources, generally refers to mobile pollution sources moveable in position. The range of mobile sources mainly includes motor vehicles and ships."

Wang added that the growth in number and variety of mobile sources is relatively fast, and the proportion of emissions is relatively high, which is an urgent field for reducing pollution and carbon emissions in the future.
Statistics show that in 2023, China's carbon dioxide emissions were about 12.6 billion tons, and the average annual carbon emissions of the road transport industry were about 1.228 billion tons, accounting for 9.8 percent of the total carbon emissions in the country.

Mobile sources, as a huge field with a long chain, wide scope and multiple intersections, need all parties to work together from multi-levels to explore the scientific methods to achieve their green and low-carbon development.
Chen Sheng, vice president of CRAES, said that the report provides in-depth guidance and reference for the industry from multiple dimensions such as development overview, policies, and research hotspots.

The report points out that in 2023, the production and sales of China's automobile, motorcycle, construction machinery and agricultural machinery topped the world. China's total energy consumption has also maintained continuous growth.

Broadly speaking, the control effect of mobile source pollutants is remarkable, but the carbon dioxide emissions are still large and the environmental pressure is still heavy. Therefore, it's significant to promote synergistic control of mobile sources to reduce pollution and carbon emissions, according to the report.

Moreover, the green and low-carbon level of light vehicles has developed rapidly, mainly due to the popularization of new energy technologies and the further development of reducing pollution and carbon emissions. However, the electrification development of heavy vehicles and non-road mobile machinery is relatively slow, and carbon reduction pressure still high.

"China's mobile sources' green and low-carbon management system will gradually focus on reducing pollution and carbon emissions," said Zou Bowen, chief expert of China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd. and deputy director of the Joint Research Center for Green Vehicles and Low-carbon Transportation.

Following this, the company will continue to build a carbon footprint management system, promote pilot applications, and strengthen AI methods to boost green and low-carbon development, said Zou.
